Picture day is one of those things that feels simple until you're standing in the parking lot wondering why your kid's jersey looks three sizes too big in every photo for the last four years. Here's what actually matters.
Wear the full uniform — and make it fit
The portrait is a sports portrait. That means the full uniform: jersey, pants, belt, socks, and cleats or sport-appropriate shoes. Hat if the sport uses one.
Fit matters more than anything else. A jersey that fits at the shoulders and doesn't hang past the hips will look dramatically better than the same jersey in a size too large. If your athlete has outgrown their uniform or is swimming in a hand-me-down, this is the year to get a replacement before picture day.
Clean it the night before
This one is obvious in theory and missed constantly in practice. Wash the uniform the night before, not the morning of — it needs to be fully dry. Grass stains, dirt, and wrinkles are permanent in a photograph. A clean, pressed uniform reads as pride in the sport.
Skip the accessories
Watches, necklaces, and non-sport wristbands tend to catch light in ways that pull attention away from the athlete's face. If the accessory isn't part of the uniform, leave it home.
Sunglasses on the hat brim? Fine. Sunglasses on the face? Save those for the pool.
Hair and grooming
Whatever looks good in person will photograph well. There's no need to change routines — just make sure hair is out of the athlete's eyes if that's a typical issue.
For athletes who wear a batting helmet or football helmet for part of the shoot: helmets come on and off, so keep hair looking intentional either way.
The team composite
We don't line everyone up for a traditional group photo. Instead, every athlete is photographed individually and we composite the team image digitally — building it from the individual portraits. This means every athlete in the team image is sharp, well-lit, and properly posed, not half-turned or blinking in the back row.
What makes the composite work is consistency: everyone in full uniform, numbers visible, same level of readiness. The more game-ready each athlete looks individually, the better the finished team image comes together.
